Dr. Laura Anderson will be running a two hour masterclass on:
“How To Support Your Transracially Adopted Black Children Through Current Events.”
In this masterclass, we will engage in reflection and exercises that examine how our Whiteness shapes our approach to talking with our children. We will also practice concrete scripts for having hard conversations that will improve your ability to connect with your child and provide building blocks for the development of their healthy racial identities. Guidelines for talking to children at different ages will be explored in depth.
Reflection on whiteness, and how it shapes our fears about discussing race with our children.
Exercises that examine the reasons we tell ourselves our children “aren’t ready” to discuss race.
Concrete scripts for talking to children in different ways at different ages about;
Racism
Black Lives Matter
Police violence
Protests in age appropriate ways

About the presenter:
Dr. Laura Anderson is a child and family psychologist who has worked with children ages 3-18 and their families for 25 years.
She specializes in supporting adoptive families, and is an adoptive parent herself. Dr. Anderson is passionate about social justice and has been involved in anti-racism work for decades.
She learns every day, and is happy to share concrete tips for White adoptive parents to talk to their Black children about racial identity, racism and current events.
